MIGHTY SAMSON[]

Medium:Comic books Published by:Gold Key Comics First Appeared:1964 Creators: Otto Binder (writer) and Frank Thorne (artist)

Kids reading comic books in the 1960s had known since birth that it was possible for an all-out war to destroy civilization — but the comics they were reading were slow to respond to …

the fact. DC Comics'Atomic Knights series, set in a post-Catastrophe future, began a full 15 years after Hiroshima and lasted only 15 quarterly episodes. Gold Key'sMighty Samson (no relation) started when the Knights had been gone a year (July, 1964, to be exact), but lasted much longer. The 1970s brought DC's Kamandi,Marvel'sWar of the Worlds and others set after the Collapse, but for the rest of the '60s, Mighty Samson was the only one.Mighty Samson is another, perhaps the first in a line of comics inspired by science fiction movies like Teenage Caveman, where their is a second Stone Age,after a nuclear war.Gold Key Comics, seem to favor science fiction themes over the standard superhero formula, used and possibly way overused by other comic publishers.

Mighty Samson #1[]

I was going to review the new MIGHTY SAMSON revival from Dark Horse...but I just can't do it. The book isn't bad exactly, but hardly captures the spirit of adventure that Otto Binder and Frank Thorne imbued the character with in it's original run. At least you get the first story of Mighty Samson, and I can't recommend the Mighty Samson archives enough! Volume 2 was released this week!

[1]From the original Mighty Samson, the moment when Sharmaine and Mindor first join together in the underground fortress. Samson has adventured mightily, saved the girl and is about to delve in to the super science of a the post apocalyptic world full of danger. And now...

[2]Sharmaine is all mean faced and spoiled, Samson is a douchebag and Mindor has neither super science OR a green monkey. Mighty Samson without random Green Monkeys? Eh. It is alright, but these panels really show one series against the other. [3] [4]==History==

In the aftermath of a nuclear war, the world is populated by small tribes of humans as well as mutated plants and animals. Born to the peaceful N'Yark tribe in what was once New York City, young Samson possesses the strength and agility of 10 men. It is no problem for him to lift a car or catch a spear in flight. When his mother is killed by warlike invaders, Samson vows to use his powers to "protect the weak from the powerful, the good from the evil." Immediately thereafter he fights the most fearsome monster of the future world, the towering liobear. Though he defeats the upright beast, it mauls him, costing him an eye. Found and nursed back to health by a young woman named Sharmaine, Samson takes up with her and her father Mindor, a scientist who re-learns 25th century technology in the laboratory he has set up in an old bank vault.

Samson (human mutant; lawful, MU: Increased Strength, Dexterity and Constitution, Reflective Epidermis: Radiation) is a wandering barbarian adventurer. An apparent mutant, due to his size and strength, but one who did only good. In the first issue, he loses an eye to a Liobear, who he kills and skinned. He was injured in the fight with the Liobear, and he was nursed back to health by Sharmaine, who remains his travailing companion ever since. Sharmaine (pure human; lawful) is the friend and possible love interest of Samson, and daughter of Mindor. He is not a scientist like her father, but he has a good working knowledge some of his research. Mindor (pure human; lawful) is the father of Sharmaine, and a self-taught scientist. With old books and other artifacts, he had figured out the working of some 20th Century inventions and events. He is kind and naive at times, but he is prone to open friendship with people who have a better knowledge of science. His is also studying as much of the wildlife as he can chronicle. He has a green mutant lemur.

This list is used for Mutant Lords as guidelines for NPCs. They are listed with notes for race, alignment, and mutations (MU).

He ran off beyond the the safe-zone, and when she ran to pull in back to safety, they got caught by a large carnivorous plant. He was able to free himself and his mother with is superhuman strength. When Samson got older, he was able to fight off a whole party of barbaric raiders, but in the fight she was mortally wounded.

Terra of Jerz (pure human; chaotic) is a power-hungry tech-user, who spent much of her live in a bomb-shelter. By using her magic-like science, she racter Tom Morrow. Mighty Samson was brought back in 1972 and lasted until #31 in 1976. The first two new issues were reprints; issue #21 (reprinting #7), and issue #22 (reprinting #2). A final new story was published in Gold Key Champion #2 in 1978. #32 (a reprint of #3, but with a line-art version of #4's cover) was published under the "Whitman Comics" line in 1982, and sold in a bag with Turok #130 and Dagar the Invincible #18.

Mighty Samson was created by writer Otto Binder and artist Frank Thorne. Artist Jack Sparling took over the artwork with #8, and Binder and Sparling did the title through #20. In the new issues beginning with #23, art was by Jose Delbo, and later by Jack Abel.

Samson was a wandering barbarian adventurer. An apparent mutant, due to his size and strength, but one who did only good. In the first issue, he loses an eye to a liobear, who he kills and skins (and whose hide he would wear). He is nursed back to health by Sharmaine, whose father Mindor had figured out some 20th-century knowledge from artifacts from the past.Unlike other heroes of this type,Samson came off as street smart, intelligent.Even so,Mighty Samson became repetitive.Mutant Monster attack and outsider barbarian tribes attack.

Samson (no relation) was first seen as a solitary barbarian-style adventurer in a region known as N'Yark, where jungle was reclaiming a landscape that consisted mostly of ruined skyscrapers. Radiation-spawned mutants, beast and man, littered the landscape, and these mutants were more like the grotesqueries of Judge Dredd's world than the "nice" mutants found in Marvel Comics' X-Men. Samson himself was a mutant, one of the few whose mutation was relatively benign — he was amazingly large and strong, hence the name. But he used his strength only for good, having promised his mother, on her deathbed, to help others rather than dominate them.

In the first issue, Samson lost an eye to a liobear, one of the large carnivores inhabiting N'Yark. A young woman named Sharmaine nursed him back to health, aided by the 20th century knowledge her father, Mindor, had managed to reconstruct from surviving artifacts. Samson repaid their kindness by protecting them from raiding savages, and from then on, Samson and Sharmaine were an "item". He cut quite a dashing figure, with a fur patch over one eye and wearing a liobear skin.

Samson and his entourage were created by writer Otto Binder (best remembered for Captain Marvel, but also known for such oddities as Space Cabby and Fatman the Human Flying Saucer) and artist Frank Thorne (Red Sonja, Ghita of Alizarr). Most covers were fully painted by Morris Gollub, who had done dozens of covers for Dell and Gold Key. Those not painted by Gollub were generally by George Wilson, another Dell/Gold Key regular.

Mighty Samson was published on a regular basis until 1969, then again in the mid-1970s. The final issue, and the only one with a line-drawn cover, staggered to the stands in 1982, six years after its immediate predecessor. 32 issues were published altogether. Samson also starred in one issue of Gold Key Champion, which came out in 1978. There doesn't seem to have been any attempt to license him to other media, so he's never appeared on TV, in theatres, or even on a pair of Underoos.

Western Printing and Lithographing, which owns Gold Key, got out of the comic book business in 1984. A few years later some of its properties, such as Doctor Solar and Turok, Son of Stone, were picked up by Valiant Comics, but Samson wasn't one of them.[1]

Project Superpowers, a comic book from Alex Ross and Dynamite Entertainment announced in 2007,[2] reviving many golden-age comic book characters will feature a Samson that is ostensibly the golden age Fox Features Samson, though the visual design seems to have been inspired by the Gold Key character.

Dark Horse Mighty Samson[]

In 2010, Dark Horse Comics began publishing the first of four hardcover archives, each reprinting several issues of the original series in one place for the first time.[3]

December 2010, Dark Horse Comics also began a new re-imagining the Mighty Samson series.[4] Among the new creative team members are former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter serving as head writer, and artist include Patrick Olliffe. The first issue included a bonus reprint of the 1964 issue, number 1.

The setting is the post apocalyptic future. The army of Jerz is attacking the tribe of N’Yark because they cannot pay the increased tribute that the newly crowned queen of Jerz is demanding. The people of N’Yark are heavily outnumbered but are barely able to defend their town. Its not until the opposing lieutenant plays a trick on them that the town is overtaken and the village leader is killed. The army begins to take prisoners when they stumble upon a mother and her newborn baby. As the lieutenant tries to take the baby to kill it, the baby rips off one of his fingers. That’s when the commanding officer calls a retreat. The army leaves but the commander is slain by the lieutenant in a secret ambush. The new leader of N’Yark, the old leader’s son, orders the child killed for being cursed. The mother, however, manages to flee with the child. She runs to the forest where she is rescued from death by a nomadic tribe of Jews. They accept the outcasts and name the baby Samson. Flash forward nineteen years later and Samson is a grown man with immense strength. He leaves with his mother to return to his tribe and his father, who is still living there. When they reach N’Yark, the Jerz are attacking again. Samson defeats the entire army single handed, but not before his mother is slain. He is accepted into N’Yark as a hero, much to the envy of the tribe leader Zarsk, who quickly befriends Samson and gives him slaves. Meanwhile, the survivors of the Jerz army return to their queen Terra and tell her what happened. She demands retribution. In addition, we get a reprint of the first Mighty Samson story from 1964. And that’s the book.

So let’s talk opinions. What an amazing book. There was action and excitement from the first page. The story was amazingly solid and the characters felt familiar and relate-able. Jim Shooter is doing a much better job with Samson that he is with Solar or Magnus. Or maybe my opinion is biased because I read the Valiant version of those characters and think these re-imaginings are slightly inferior. The art was great. Clean, dark when necessary. Reminded me of old school Conan art that Barry Windsor Smith used to do. So far this book is awesome. There’s drama, betrayal, conniving, war. Everything that makes a book a page turner. The reprint was a nice added bonus as well. I’m definitely going to keep this one on my pull list for a while. That’s my opinion folks. Take it or leave it.

So far, the most drastic change seems to be with the characters of Sharmaine and Mindor, Samson's companions. In the old comic (by the way, this issue also reprints the original 1964 premiere tale), they are the ones who rescue and heal Samson after an encounter with a monstrous liobear. In the new version they are slaves offered to Samson. And Sharmaine is certainly more well-endowed now than she ever was in the '60s! And then there's Queen Terra ... her introduction in this issue just screams La of Opar from the Tarzan books ... and she's as magnificently endowed as Sharmaine!

Samson fights off a pack of devil-brutes as they attack the tribe of N’Yark in the middle of the night. Zarsk, the tribe’s cowardly, scheming leader only shows up when everything is safe. Samson goes on a quest into Jerz territory to return the children of an old woman. He battles sea monsters and the men of Jerz but manages, through his amazing strength, to defeat them all. The queen of Jerz, Terra, is so impressed by him that she asks him to be her warlord. She feels that the world will fall at her feet with Samson by her side. When Samson refuses, she releases the girls to him and gives him a token. Samson returns to N’Yark where he is praised and he finally earns a little respect from his slave Sharmaine. Meanwhile, Sunder, the Jerz warlord, now banished by the queen treks through the forest until he comes upon a compound that seems abandoned. And that’s the book.

The action never lets up. There is plenty of personality in each individual character and Shooter is developing each of them nicely. The Queen is especially ballsy. I like how she doesn’t back down from Samson for a second and always seems like the one with all of the power. Samson is going to have to wisen up fast or she will eat him alive. The art is also pretty good. It’s not large, in your face stuff, but it gets the point across. There is nice shading and gorgeous backgrounds. Not to mention that amazing cover. My one issue with this book is that it takes so darn long for it to come out. I know it’s bi-monthly but I really want it to come out quicker. If the book was bad, I wouldn’t mind as much. I’ve already given up on Magnus because even though it was a good book, I have no desire to read it after it’s been out of my thoughts for so long. Please don’t let that happen to Samson. Dark Horse has a winner here and they can’t drop the ball.

Five hundred years after the end of the world, among the overgrown ruins, in tangled jungles where misbegotten horrors lurk, barbarian armies battle for supremacy. To save the world from Warlord Sunder's dreaded behemoths, Samson allies himself with Queen Terra of the Jerz and her barbarian horde. But the irresistible Terra has wicked ways of turning allies into lovers. Inflamed and enraptured by Terra, Samson becomes more and more ruthless to please her. If he loses himself to the dark passions she arouses . . . then who will save the world from him?
